Raspilights is the crazy project that powers the holiday lights show. The README goes into details on how the circuitry and code all play together.
Meep is a homemade alarm system, built for a house that is pre-wired for an alarm. Based on a raspberry pi, it provides audio and SMS alerts and can control relays for lights, garage doors, etc. It can be extended to use a cellular module, call an emergency services number, and basically anything else.
